About the Role

Day to day

As a youth serving agency, we work at the request of the young people enrolled in our programs to find them the mentors that they want and need – mentors that can ignite and empower their promise and potential. In order to meet the needs of our clients – the youth we serve – we have launched a new initiative: The Mentor Corps Fellowship. The Mentor Corps Fellowship is a paid, paraprofessional fellowship that seeks to multiply the impact of highly-sought-after mentors by matching them 1-to-1 with multiple Littles in our program(s) as they also lead important project-based initiatives for the organization.

In recent years, our agency has gone through an extensive internal process to ensure we are intentionally welcoming, serving, and supporting LGBTQ youth, families, volunteers, and staff. Our agency is excited to expand this work by hiring a MentorCorps Fellow to assist our agency in developing avenues for LGBTQ youth to connect with BBBSMT programs.  In addition to mentoring a cohort of LGBTQ youth, the MentorCorps Fellow will 1) develop and facilitate virtual GSAs (Gender and Sexuality Alliances) for geographically and socially isolated LGBTQ youth, and 2) provide a channel for these LGBTQ youth to connect with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle TN programming and mentors.

The MentorCorps Fellow will:

  • Network with schools, guidance counselors, service providers and other partners to build the partnerships necessary to launch a series of virtual GSA groups. Special emphasis should be given to geographically and socially isolated youth.
  • Develop/identify curricula, activities, and other materials to support students in BBBSMT-led GSA groups.
  • Facilitate virtual groups that connect LGBTQ youth with supportive peers, activities, and networks that may not be available in their geographical area.
  • Serve as mentor to approximately 10 LGBTQ youth seeking mentors in our program.
Key Responsibilities
  • Network with schools, guidance counselors, service providers, and other community partners to 1) develop the foundation for a series of virtual community GSAs and 2) identify LGBTQ youth who might benefit from participating in a community GSA.
  • Develop and/or identify curriculum, activities, conversation starters, and other materials that may be used in the GSA group setting.
  • Facilitate regularly occurring GSA meetings with LGBTQ youth, utilizing youth voice and leadership in both planning and implementation.
  • Refer LGBTQ youth to BBBSMT mentoring programs and work with LGBTQ Project Manager to ensure the success of these relationships.
  • Partner with established GSAs in BBBSMT’s service area to facilitate relationships and offer support.
  • Integrate principals of strengths-based youth work and trauma-informed care into programming and interactions with youth.
  • Serve as mentor to approximately 10 LGBTQ youth.
  • Curate and/or develop resources for mentors who are matched with LGBTQ youth.
  • Participate in monthly match support with BBBS staff and accept coaching, feedback and training as needed.
  • Work with the Education and Inclusion team to develop resources, policies, and best practices for supporting LGBTQ youth.
  • Highlight the accomplishments of BBBSMT-involved LGBTQ youth on approved social media platforms.

About You

This Job May Be For You…
  • LGBTQ persons or those passionate about LGBTQ issues
  • Previous experience working with LGBTQ youth, leading LGBTQ youth groups (i.e. GSAs), or participating in LGBTQ youth groups
  • Are familiar with principals of trauma-informed care and strengths-based youth work
  • Enjoy identifying people’s strengths and finding ways to help them grow
  • Enjoy the challenging of building new programs and generating excitement about their potential
  • Have strong networking skills and enjoy connecting with new partners
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the BBBSMT mission and core values
  • Have previous experience with program development and planning
  • LGBTQ people and people of color are encouraged to apply
  • Completed background check and training (criminal background will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Criminal record will not automatically disqualify applicants)
  • Ambitious and goal-driven
  • Commitment to serve at least 12 months
  • Ability to allocate 20 hours to program requirements
  • Availability nights and weekends
