FAQs
For Bigs
What if I don’t meet all the requirements?
If you have questions about eligibility, we ask that you call to speak with a staff member before signing up for a training.
How long will it take to get matched?
The application process can take up to a month and a half, but actually being matched with a Little depends on a number of factors, so wait times can vary. A lot of thought and intention goes into our matching process to ensure the best fit for the mentor, child and their family, so we don’t match on a first come, first served basis.
Do I have to meet with my Little on the same day and at the same time every week?
It depends on the program. Our site-based program is mostly consistent with the day and time you meet with your Little, but in our community-based program you and the child’s guardian can choose what works best from week to week. For full details on each program, visit the Mentoring Programs page.
What if I go on vacation or travel for work?
For our in-person programs we can accommodate for occasional travel, but if you have to miss more than one outing per month, this may not be the best fit for you. We do offer a few programs that are conducted virtually that may work better for someone who has frequent travel needs. Learn more about the different options on the Mentoring Programs page.
What if I don’t live in this service area, but I am willing to travel?
We can only take volunteers who live in one of the eight counties we serve throughout Middle Tennessee. The only exception is if you work in one of the counties and want to be a site-based mentor.
Here are the counties we serve:
Davidson
Williamson
Rutherford
Wilson
Sumner
Robertson
Dickson
Cheatham
Can you validate my hours if I need community service?
No, we cannot validate service hours.
FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Does it cost anything for my child to be part of the program?
No, you can enroll your child in the program at no cost.
How long will it take my child to be matched?
A lot of thought and intention goes into our matching process. Matches are based off available mentors in your area, compatible schedules and who will be the best fit for you and your child, so wait times can vary.
What if my child doesn’t want to be part of the program?
It is very important that we have active child participation for our program to be successful. The child must be a willing participant in order to be enrolled in our program.
How do you screen volunteers?
Child safety is our number one priority. We run background checks on every volunteer and take additional steps to ensure the safety of the youth we serve. You will learn more details about our screening process during the Parent Orientation.
