January 31 is National Thank Your Mentor Day, a fitting final day end to National Mentoring Month.
Many of us, myself included, have benefited greatly from the guidance provided by caring adults when we were beginning life’s journey. I would bet that you, like I, did not necessarily realize the value of the investment being made in our younger selves – words shared over a card game or drive to the store, someone showing up for us day after day- and how that time invested would help drive decisions years down the road.
If that person who was a role model for you is still living, please seize the opportunity to reach out to them today and let them know how you’re doing, and how their efforts helped you become the person you are today. Thank them for having seen the potential in you, and for helping defend those possibilities.
If your mentor is no longer with us, then I encourage you to continue their legacy by volunteering to help a young person yourself.
At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we know that potential is everywhere. Every young person in Middle Tennessee has the potential to change the world, including those that reside in the margins, among the shadows, and those in plain sight.
The common denominator is that they just need someone in their corner, and it’s time to take a stand and be their ally. Be the person that your own mentor was for you.
