Celebrating Pride Month: The History of Pride and Why It’s Important

Pride Month is a time to uplift and support LGBTQIA+ individuals as we reflect on how far we’ve come, and how far we have to go. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee celebrates differences, and providing more LGBTQIA+ youth with LGBTQIA+ mentors is a top priority for us.

Making the Most of Your Virtual Match

Communicating virtually has become the norm in our world today. While we offer many different types of mentoring programs at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, each program has had to adjust to some form of virtual mentoring in the past year. We spoke with Big Brother Anthony and Little Brother Arron, who began their community-based match virtually during the pandemic, to hear about their experience so far and advice for making the most of a virtual match.

Double the Impact: Two-Time Mentor Jane

Some mentors go above and beyond in their service to young people, and Big Sister Jane is one of those people. Jane has now committed twice to serving as a mentor for high school students through our E-Mentoring program, committing a total of four years to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee and her Little Sisters, with a focus on college and career readiness.

Empowering Young Women, One Match at a Time

We know that every young person has unique potential and promise within them, and it’s especially inspiring to see our Big Sisters walk alongside their Little Sisters throughout their mentoring relationship to uncover the confidence, strength, and passions that they have carried with them all along. In honor of Women’s History Month, we asked a few of our Little Sisters to share some insight into the impact of mentorship in their lives, women who inspire them, and their hopes and dreams for the future.

One-Year Virtual: Celebrating Keeping Kids Connected

One year ago, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee pivoted to virtual operations as a result of the global pandemic. And while that pivot brought with it many new changes and challenges, one thing that stayed the same was our laser focus on youth. Our team quickly, yet effectively went into full creativity and innovation mode to achieve so many incredible things that, through the generosity of our supporters, have enabled us to continue to serve our youth as well as scale the impact of our mentoring programs.

Hoping for a Forever Match: Michelle and Vanessa’s Story

When Little Sister Vanessa met Michelle, she was shy and felt like she didn’t fit in with the world. She wanted a Big Sister to help her learn how to communicate better with others and help her get out of the house and try new things. And for Michelle, becoming a Big was a way for her to slow down and help a young woman since most of her past volunteer work focused on adults.

MentorHub: Reimagining Mentoring in a Virtual World and Beyond

As an organization that builds professionally supported mentoring relationships that typically take place in a face-to-face environment, the pandemic turned our world upside down. When everything needed to move virtually, we knew it was crucial to reimagine what mentoring looks like in this new normal and seek innovative tools to keep kids connected to their mentors.

Black History Month: Join the Celebration Throughout Middle Tennessee

February is Black History Month, a time to reflect on important historical events and the achievements of influential Black leaders who helped ignite change and shape a brighter future for Americans in our country. Join us in celebrating Nashville and Middle Tennessee’s rich Black history with special events, performances and activities throughout the city.

Why We Mentor: Becoming a Big Then and Choosing to Mentor Now

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, we have an army of mentors passionate about igniting the potential in youth. We spoke with a few volunteers to learn why they became a Big, why they choose to mentor, and why they think others should mentor too.
